When choosing a double bed, we usually first look at the appearance and color. Meanwhile, this bed width has the greatest impact on whether two people sleep comfortably. A difference of several centimeters can decide whether your partner wakes you up at night or not. We show you how to choose between sizes 140, 160, 180 and 200 cm.
What are the standard sizes of double beds?
The size of the bed is usually given as the size of the mattress. The most popular are:
- 140 × 200 cm – the smallest bed for two people,
- 160 × 200 cm – the most frequently chosen size in Poland,
- 180 × 200 cm – a comfortable bed for couples who like freedom,
- 200 × 200 cm – size for people who value space above all else.
Remember that the bed frame is larger than the mattress. In our double beds, the external dimension is the size of the mattress plus approximately 8 cm in length and width.
Bed 140 × 200 – for whom?
It's a good choice for small bedroom or guest room. There is one for each person 70 cm width, i.e. as much as on a narrow single bed. It will work well if you sleep peacefully, like closeness, or if the bed is intended to serve mainly one person and the other only from time to time.
Bed 160 × 200 – the golden mean
Bed 160 × 200 It's a size that fits most bedrooms and most couples. Gives 80 cm per person and at the same time fits in rooms with a width of approx 3 meters. If you don't know what to choose, this is the safest option.
Bed 180 × 200 and 200 × 200 – more freedom
You should consider a wider bed when:
- one of you sleeps restlessly, turns often or snores,
- you have different getting up times and you don't want to wake up,
- children or dogs jump into bed in the morning,
- you like to sleep under separate blankets.
At width 180 cm you can also lay down instead of one large mattress two mattresses 90 × 200 cm. Each person then chooses the hardness for themselves.
How much space do you need around the bed?
The bed must not only fit on the floor, but also be comfortable to get into.
- On the sides leave at least 60–70 cm, to move freely and place the bedside table.
- In the legs will be useful approximately 70–90 cm, especially if there is a wardrobe or chest of drawers opposite.
- By the window check that the headboard does not cover the windowsill and radiator.
A simple method: mark the outline of the bed on the floor with painter's tape and walk around the room for a day or two. You will quickly feel whether the size is right.
Headboard: low or high?
Our double beds come standard with a high headboard 76 cm, and on request 95 cm. A higher headboard works better if you like to read or watch movies in bed, and in bedrooms with high ceilings. The lower one is good under a window or in a small room because it does not optically overwhelm.
Does a wider bed have to be less stable?
No, as long as it is well constructed. Our solid wood double beds have six legs, including two in the middle that support the frame, and load capacity 400 kg. Thanks to this, even a bed 200 × 200 cm does not sag in the middle. The solid pine frame is included and the mattress can range from 10 to 22 cm thickness.
Bed with or without a drawer?
